The Carneau is a breed of pigeon developed over many years of selective breeding primarily as a utility breed.[1] Carneau, along with other varieties of domesticated pigeons, are all descendants from the Rock Pigeon (Columba livia). The breed is known for large size and suitability for squab production.


The Carneau originated in northern France and southern Belgium in Hainaut. Named Carneau, Carniau, Caniau or cainiau. The first Carneau standard was published by M. Robert Fontaine the 24 june 1891 in the revue "Chasse et Pêche". Once a free flying breed, living by fielding.[2]
